Dr. Frank Masese has over 15 years of research experience on freshwater ecosystems in East Africa. Straddling the terrestrial-aquatic domain, his research seeks to understand how landscape variables and human activities shape aquatic ecosystem structure and functioning with a focus on nutrient cycling, organic matter processing, community composition, and trophic dynamics. His research profile also includes development of biological indices for assessing and monitoring the ecological condition of streams and rivers. Currently, he is leading a team of scientists to develop a national biotic index for monitoring streams and rivers in Kenya. He has also been involved in several projects aimed at sustainable water resources management, capacity building and strengthening postgraduate training in institutions of higher learning in Eastern Africa. In addition to teaching, he mentors and supervises undergraduate (bachelors) and postgraduate students (MSc and PhD) and organizes short courses for training students in field techniques, and data management and analysis.
